Common window types found in residential construction:

 

 Single Hung

Upper (outside) sash is fixed in place while the  lower sash is operapble.  Lower (inside) sash tilts in for easy cleaning.

Double Hung

Upper (outside) sash slides down and Lower (inside) sash slides up.  Both sashes tilt in for easy cleaning.

Sliding Windows

 Two-Lite sliding windows have one operable sash while the other remains stationary.  The stationary sash is on the outside while the operable sash is on the inside.  Three-Lite sliding windows have a single fixed sash in the middle (outside) while both the left and right sashes are operable.  The width of your opening is the biggest factor in determining whether you could use a Two-Lite or Three-Lite sliding window.
